凡祭有四时春祭曰礿，夏祭禘，秋祭曰尝，祭曰烝。礿、禘阳义也；尝、烝阴义也。禘者阳盛也，尝者阴之也。故曰：莫重禘、尝。古者于也，发爵赐服，阳义也；于尝也出田邑，发秋政顺阴义也。故记：“尝之日，发室，示赏也；草则墨；未发秋政则民弗敢草也。故曰：禘、尝之大矣。治国之本，不可不知也。其义者君也，能事者臣也。不明义，君人不全；能其事，为臣不。夫义者，所以志也，诸德之发。是故其德盛者其志厚；其志厚，其义章。其义者，其祭也敬。敬则竟内之子孙敢不敬矣。是故子之祭也，必身莅之；有故，则人可也。虽使人，君不失其义者君明其义故也。德薄者，其志轻疑于其义，而求；使之必敬也，可得已。祭而不，何以为民父母？夫鼎有铭，铭，自名也。自名称扬其先祖之美而明着之后世者。为先祖者，莫有美焉，莫不有焉，铭之义，称而不称恶，此孝孝孙之心也。唯者能之。铭者，譔其先祖之有德，功烈勋劳庆赏名列于天下，而之祭器；自成其焉，以祀其先祖也。显扬先祖，以崇孝也。身比，顺也。明示后，教也。夫铭者壹称而上下皆得耳矣。是故君子观于铭也，既美所称，又美其所。为之者，明足见之，仁足以与，知足以利之，谓贤矣。贤而勿，可谓恭矣。故孔悝之鼎铭曰：月丁亥，公假于庙。公曰：“叔！乃祖庄叔，左成公。成公乃命叔随难于汉阳，宫于宗周，奔走射。启右献公。公乃命成叔，纂祖服。乃考文叔兴旧耆欲，作率士，躬恤卫国，勤公家，夙夜不，民咸曰：『休！』”公曰：“舅！予女铭：若乃考服。”悝拜首曰：“对扬以之，勤大命施于彝鼎。”此卫孔之鼎铭也。古之子论譔其先祖之，而明着之后世也。以比其身，重其国家如此。孙之守宗庙社稷，其先祖无美而之，是诬也；有而弗知，不明也知而弗传，不仁。此三者，君子所耻也。昔者，公旦有勋劳于天。周公既没，成、康王追念周公所以勋劳者，而尊鲁；故赐之以祭。外祭，则郊是也；内祭，则尝禘是也。夫大禘，升歌《清庙，下而管《象》朱干玉戚，以舞大武》；八佾，舞《大夏》；此子之乐也。康周，故以赐鲁也。孙纂之，至于今废，所以明周公德而又以重其国。
